Internships with Library Services at Minnesota State University, Mankato
According to the university Career Development Center, “experiential learning" in the form of internships, co-operative education, practicums, externships, and job shadowing is a great way for students to gain practical skills and experience from on-the-job training that cannot be found in the classroom setting.” These experiences can also introduce students to potential professions, confirm professional goals, gain experience, meet mentors and much more.
Internship Opportunities for Minnesota State University, Mankato, students:
Library Services offers a limited number of internship opportunities each year. These internships are primarily intended to introduce MSU students to the fields of academic librarianship and archival studies. Occasionally internships are available within Library Services focused on broader professional experiences such as marketing, technology, and assessment. Internship availability is based on availability of appropriate projects and library faculty supervisors.
Library Services offers these internship opportunities to support the academic and professional goals of university students by providing professional opportunities, building professional connections, earning college credit, and developing new skills related to their professional goals. Internships are also intended to advance the goals and work of Library Services.
Library Services offers paid and unpaid internship opportunities. Paid internships are dependent on available funds and the student’s availability to get paid (for example students with assistantships or other campus jobs may not be able to have another campus job).
Internship Requirements:
- Enrolled Minnesota State University Mankato student (Undergraduate or Graduate)
- Student is earning course credit for the internship

Non-Minnesota State University, Mankato Students
Library Services occasionally gets asked to supervise interns from other universities, primarily students pursing a MLS program. At this time, we will not be able to offer internships to non-Minnesota State University, Mankato students. One good way to get academic library experience is through a graduate assistantship. We offer Graduate Assistantship opportunities for enrolled or prospective MSU students each year and would encourage students to consider applying for one of those opportunities. Postings for Graduate Assistantships are usually done in the late spring and available on the Human Resources Career Opportunities site.
Pending availability of a library faculty member, we may be able to support requests for limited job-shadowing for non-MSU students. Individuals interested in shadowing should submit their request through our online form.
