Library Services Discontinues Fines
Press Release
Fines traditionally have been used to encourage library users to return overdue materials. In recent years, numerous libraries have removed fines to ensure a more equitable experience for all library patrons. "Equity for all is one of our 'forever' goals," said Michael Gutierrez, Director of Library Operations & Access Services. "The removal of fines on overdue materials is a strong step in that direction."
Patrons with unreturned items may be limited in their ability to check out additional materials, including equipment and study rooms. The Library will only bill patrons for lost or damaged materials.
Librarian Barb Bergman emphasized to students that “This is your library, and as such, we’re placing trust in the MavFam to be considerate about returning your shared resources.”
